The car has never been disassembled and except for a paint job in the ‘70s and a more recent engine detailing, it remains pretty much original.

Matching numbers L72 427/425. Same owner since 1969! 50,770 original miles. Mostly original with one repaint in the mid-70s. NOS side pipes added. $20,000 worth of recent service work. Spectacular big block mid-year Corvette with a great pedigree!

You read that correctly, this lovely 1966 Corvette has been in the same owner’s hands since he was 19 years old in 1969. He’d seen the car around town being driven by its previous owner, a guy well-known for performance cars, and when that guy was upgrading to something else, it was an opportunity. In the years since, the Corvette was treated as a special machine, never a daily driver, and shows just 50,770 original miles today. The car has never been disassembled and except for a paint job in the ‘70s and a more recent engine detailing, it remains pretty much original. That 1974 repaint in the original Milano Maroon is holding up beautifully, with almost no signs of age or significant wear, just a soft shine that could probably pass for factory enamel if you didn’t know otherwise. Gaps are even and the doors close the way a C2’s doors should—solid and without a lot of effort. The chrome and stainless trim is original and in excellent condition with no issues, and all the factory glass is still in place with correct “bugs” and date codes. The only notable deviation is a set of NOS side pipes that were purchased at the dealership parts counter and installed in 1981. This is a car with a bulletproof history.

The beautiful black vinyl “Standard” interior remains in fantastic condition and is 100% original right down to the carpets. The low mileage helps, but you can instantly see that this is a car that was always protected, loved, and maintained. Seats are firm and comfortable, the door panels aren’t cracked or deformed, and the lovely wood-rimmed wheel shows decades of use but no signs of problems. All the gauges are operational except the clock and the unusual AM/FM radio with its horizontal orientation works properly. Even the power antenna works like it should! There are aftermarket floor mats and you might find a little wear on the carpets underneath, but certainly nothing that needs replacement—that would be a mistake. The shifter is original, but it’s on a Hurst linkage, so it feels crisper than stock but the reverse lock-out is disabled. There’s considerable storge space behind the seats and under the large rear window, and the fiberboard headliner remains in excellent shape. We often say that Corvettes tend to lead exemplary lives, but this one really is special.

The engine is the original, numbers-matching L72 427 cubic inch V8, which was rated at 425 horsepower in 1966—the top engine you could buy. It has never been apart, although a recent detailing has brightened the Chevy Orange paint and the chrome details throughout. You’ll note it sports correct painted valve covers, all the ignition shielding is in place, and tower hose clamps were installed. Thanks to recent service work by Corvette Conspiracy, it starts easily and idles beautifully, with a lopey idle that’s magnified by the side pipes. This car still sports its original transistorized ignition, which was an option in 1966, and it works properly—the engine almost fires like a modern fuel-injected machine. A big Holley 780 4-barrel feeds the mighty 427 and offers crisp throttle response and a thrilling soundtrack to match the exhaust. This car is just a joy to drive. Even better, the original Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission racks through the gears like a bolt-action rifle, and with 4.11 gears on a Posi out back, you’d better believe things happen fast! The body has obviously never been off the frame, but it’s super clean and there are absolutely no rust issues in the usual areas ahead of the rear wheels or in the birdcage. The recent work included rebuilding the rear end, new suspension components and bushings, new fuel lines, fresh brakes, and much more (recent receipts totaling more than $20,000 are included with the car). The only demerit is that the spare tire and carrier are missing, but replacements are available at reasonable cost. Beautiful knock-off wheels are fitted with fresh 205/75/15 gold stripe radials for a bit of an improvement in ride and handling.

Documentation includes the original manuals, including warranty booklet with Protect-O-Plate, plus the aforementioned service receipts.

This is our favorite kind of car—authentic, beautiful, but not so perfect you’re afraid to drive it. The burly 427 is an absolute joy to rip through the gears, and thanks to awesome originality, it feels more like 1966 than most restored cars. It offers a great pedigree and no deviations from stock, making it a car for the purist who loves to drive. Call today!
