There’s a lot to see, so take your time with the photos because this is a very impressive car.

1934 was a very good year for automobiles and styling for almost every single manufacturer hit a high point. Even vehicles like this 1934 Ford sedan delivery, a basic commercial truck, are downright gorgeous. Ford only built 9052 of them in 1934 at a cost of just $595, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that most were worked to death. That’s really a shame, because if there’s a more stylish way to move your cargo, I don’t know what it might be.

This is a real 100% Henry Ford steel sedan delivery, including the fenders, making it not only rare but highly desirable as well. Not a single panel was cut, shaved, modified, or altered save for the cargo door (we’ll get to that in a moment), so it retains that fantastic ’34 Ford shape. Every square inch of the body was expertly prepped, smoothed, and finessed back into shape in preparation for that gorgeous paint job, and panel alignment is surely worlds better than new in every way. Suicide-style doors are a neat trick today, but they were standard equipment on the 1934 Fords and the scroll-shaped door handles are simply beautiful, proving that you didn’t need to give up beauty to do a day’s work. The paint is a custom-mixed 2-stage urethane with lots of pearl and metallic in it and named “French Wine,” and it is simply dazzling in the sunlight. Our photos simply don’t do it justice. Custom pinstripe work on the front fenders, rear door, and along the belt moldings is simple and sophisticated, not over-wrought like you see on so many rods at shows, and doesn’t detract from the presentation but merely accents it. All of the chrome was restored or replaced, and that’s one of the nicest ’34 Ford grilles I’ve ever seen. The factory bumpers were shaved but the mini bumperettes do a decent job of protecting the vulnerable fenders and look trick doing it. Restored running boards wear correct rubber mats with chrome Ford script and original taillights with blue-dot lenses give it a traditional hot rod look. There’s a lot to see, so take your time with the photos because this is a very impressive car.

The interior doesn’t break any new ground, but it’s comfortable and tasteful, using gray tweed and leatherette to give it an appropriate look. The bucket seats are from a late-model and offer plenty of adjustment for long, comfortable tours and the upholstery work is first-rate. Burgundy carpets are beautifully tailored with custom-bound edges and the door panels have an old-fashioned look that’s suitable for 1934. Note that the original window garnish moldings are in place, original door hardware has been restored, and there are trick wireless contacts that make the door jambs look tidy. An Ididit tilt steering column was painted to match the body and topped with a banjo-style wood wheel that’s elegant and appropriate, and the original dash was retained. Custom billet panels for both the gauges and the glove box lid add a bit of contrast, and the vintage-style gauges are from Classic Instruments. Overhead, there’s a custom woodgrained console with a Blaupunkt AM/FM/CD stereo head unit, which feeds speakers stashed throughout the truck. Controls for the heat, headlights, and windshield wipers are above the clock and there are remote switches for both the power rear window and tailgate release.

Release the tailgate and it swings up on custom hinges and gas-charged struts, just like a modern minivan. The effect gets a lot of attention at shows and it’s actually a lot more practical than the original side-opening setup. Inside you’ll find a fully upholstered cargo bay that uses the same materials found up front to give it a very polished look. There are lights and LED accents in the overhead console plus a pair of on-demand lights and a 12V power point in back, making this an awesome vehicle for tailgate parties. A compartment under the floor hides the battery and provides secure storage, as well as a pair of side compartments behind upholstered doors for small items.

Mechanically, it doesn’t break any new ground, but when something works this well there’s really no need to reinvent the wheel. It’s a 350 cubic inch Chevy H.O. crate motor topped by an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, and it’s so finely tuned that it starts as quickly as a fuel-injected motor and idles smoothly even when cold. Lots of polished billet aluminum and stainless steel makes the engine bay look clean and functional, but not over-done, and there’s a smooth firewall from Bitchin’ Products. There’s no need for power steering in a vehicle this light and it’s quite easy to maneuver even at low speeds, but it does offer power disc brakes for safety.

Underneath, the chassis is a TCI Stage III custom setup that includes tubular chrome A-arms up front, a fat sway bar, and rack-and-pinion steering, plus the aforementioned disc brakes. A 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission offers crisp shifts and a deep overdrive for effortless highway driving, even with the 3.73 gears in the 8-inch Ford rear end. That rear end is suspended on a traditional 4-link setup and there’s a coil-over shock at each corner. Ceramic-coated headers feed a custom exhaust system with stainless mufflers and low-profile chrome tips under the rear valence, and the sound is exactly right—racy without being obnoxious. 17-inch Boyd Coddington billet aluminum wheels are a tasteful, timeless design that won’t look dated someday and they’re wrapped in 205/40/17 front and 255/50/17 Nitto performance radials with lots of life left in them.

This is a jaw-droppingly gorgeous car in every way. With just over 1700 miles on the build, it’s ready to cruise or show at almost any level and I can’t imagine anyone having another one at shows. Practical, comfortable, and stylish, the panel delivery has been popular for decades and it’s easy to see why.
