The recent repaint gives the bodywork a depth and shine it never could have had when it was new and with all original sheetmetal and no signs of rust or previous damage, it’s in fantastic shape.

Vintage trucks are red hot right now, and few are more popular than the GM “Action Line” pickups of 1967-1972. These were work trucks when they were new, so survival rates aren’t all that high and the GMC versions are particularly rare since far fewer were sold compared to the similar Chevy version. As a result, spotting one today is rather unusual and finding one that hasn’t been abused, rusted, or modified beyond recognition is even harder. Enter this handsome 1969 GMC C1500 pickup, which is one of those honest old pickups that someone maintained properly and never saw the rigors of harsh weather. It’s mostly original save for a surprisingly high-quality repaint last year, and you’ll find that not only is it good-looking, but it’s also ready, willing, and able to get back to work.

Still wearing its original color combination (code 555) of White over Saddle, this is a great-looking truck. Not flashy, not over-done, but rugged and handsome the way a truck should be. The long bed gives it great proportions and makes it extremely handy when you’ve got big stuff to move. The white top adds to the vintage look, an old-fashioned truck look that still seemed appropriate in 1969. The recent repaint gives the bodywork a depth and shine it never could have had when it was new and with all original sheetmetal and no signs of rust or previous damage, it’s in fantastic shape. Fit and finish are quite good, the hoot snugs down without slamming, and the original BX2 lower body side molding is still in place. The tailgate has a painted insert that highlights the big GMC emblem and the chrome and stainless trim is in great shape for being almost completely original. A heavy-duty step bumper includes a heavy-duty receiver hitch, so it’s always ready to help out around the homestead. And the bed is protected by a spray-in bedliner that was neatly applied to protect but not distract from the clean look. And we love the stand-up spare mounted in the bed, a great example of form following function which is why we love pickups so much.

Aside from a new gray seat cover, the interior appears to be almost entirely original, which gives you a good idea of how well-preserved this truck really is. It’s certainly no-frills, which is how pickups were before they became fashion statements, but that’s not to say it isn’t comfortable. It’s easy to climb behind the wheel, which is showing a few cracks and is probably the worst part on the entire truck. Not a big deal and easy enough to replace if you don’t like it. Original gauges cover the basics and all the instruments are working properly. The 4-speed manual transmission certainly makes this truck a lot of fun to drive, and it isn’t a primitive-feeling rock-crusher gearbox, either. Shifts are crisp, clutch action is light, and it would be easy to make this a daily driver if that’s your thing. The factory AM radio is still in the dash, but it’s probably due for an upgrade and it does have seat belts for safety. No frills, but no complaints, either. Just an honest old truck.

If such things matter, you’ll be happy to learn that the original, numbers-matching 350 cubic inch V8 engine still lives under the hood. In fact, it’s so original that the factory-installed smog system is still in place—a little piece of hardware that’s probably worth a good chunk of change to a Corvette or Camaro guy. It has been lightly detailed in Chevy Orange engine enamel, and it runs superbly. Turn the key and it always fires right up and the idle is smooth enough that you may not even notice it’s already running. It remains completely stock—no aftermarket speed parts or questionable “upgrades,” just factory hardware that was engineered to be reliable. Power steering and power brakes make it easy to handle even with a load in the bed and it’s obvious that this was never a rusty truck—just check out how clean that firewall is!

Underneath, the aforementioned 4-speed shifts easily and even though it’s not a Muncie with a Hurst shifter, it’s still enjoyable to row the gears. Out back, it carries reasonable 3.73 gears that make it feel quick around town but thanks to the rather tall tires, it remains a decent highway cruiser. Ride quality is about what you’d expect for a vintage pickup; a little bouncy but not objectionable and you know that suspension is built to handle whatever you throw at it. The undercarriage is original, but having spent exactly zero days in the snow and salt, it’s quite solid if not totally detailed for show. It was obviously cleaned up a bit during the restoration and all the original hardware is still in place, including the heavy-duty rear axle. It’s still exhaling through a single exhaust system, and while it’s a bit old, it sounds just fine. Fresh 15-inch chrome wheels add some sparkle and carry new 235/75/15 blackwall radials that look suitably trucky.

This is a nice truck. Nicer, in fact, than most of the beaters you see out there. It lived an easy life, it has a great look, and someone spent a pile of cash that was all out of proportion to its value to bring it up to this level. Not exactly restored, so it’s got that original truck feel, but the quality is evident throughout. This is an easy truck to love, even if you’re looking for something that can work for a living.
