If you want an investment-grade Charger that’s also a joy to drive, you will not be able to do better than this Hemi Orange R/T.

We’ve made no secret of our love of the Dodge Charger and it seems we’re not alone, because every one we’ve had has sold quickly and without much effort. I suspect that this incredible 1970 Dodge Charger R/T will be much the same. While our primary focus is on quality, this particular Charger really is the total package: 100% matching numbers, exceptional fresh rotisserie restoration, incredible documentation including a complete Broadcast Sheet, and a long list of options that includes factory A/C and an awesome color combination. If you want an investment-grade Charger that’s also a joy to drive, you will not be able to do better than this Hemi Orange R/T.

The gentleman who restored it tells a fascinating story about his 20 years of ownership. His employer originally found the car—a complete, running, driving car—and commissioned his employee to restore it for him. As these things do, the boss lost interest and suggested to the employee who had already spent so many hours on it that he buy it and finish it. And that’s exactly what happened. Chipping away at it little by little as time and funds allowed (he had a family, after all), he eventually ended up with a spectacular show-winning Charger that’s flat-out the nicest we’ve ever seen in our showroom. And this was the right car to restore, because it’s an original EV2 Hemi Orange R/T, making it the most eyeball-popping B-body you’re likely to see.

The pedigree is pretty impressive, too. Check out the long list of options on the fender tag:

Workmanship on this Charger is exceptional. Take a look down the sides of the body and you will not only see that it’s smooth and ripple-free and that the paint has an impossibly deep gloss, but also that the ever-so-slight body crease that runs from nose to tail—that’s missing on a lot of these cars, sanded to oblivion by guys who don’t even see it. The doors close with a reassuring solidity and the gaps are outstanding, surely better than new. The quarters and trunk extensions have been replaced and there is some fresh metal under the vinyl roof (no surprise there), but the rest of the car is OEM steel and we have restoration photos that show it as a pretty clean, straight car before they started. The Hemi Orange paint just glows, which is due to a bit of metallic in the mix, which is how the factory did it. Park this car next to, say, a Vitamin-C Orange car and you’ll quickly see why Hemi Orange is special. It’s deep and lustrous in a way that makes this car look very well finished indeed. The flip-up headlights work properly, the full-width taillights are beautiful, and it has optional hood pins that only add to the racy feel. In addition, the chrome is all new, the emblems are correct replacements, and the white vinyl top (which is also on the fender tag) uses the correct grain to look exactly right. The combination REALLY pops.

The white bucket seat interior with black carpets and trim is likewise 100% new and exactly right. The seats, carpets, and other soft parts show almost zero wear and the sizzling white vinyl jumps out of the interior. Obviously on a car with “Road and Track” in its name (what, you didn’t know that R/T stood for “road and track?”) you need a center console, as well as a full set of Rallye gauges, including a fully operational Tick-Tock-Tach that keeps good time. You’ll note that the unusual top-mounted HVAC controls include functions for air conditioning, which works like it should, and the factory radio remains in the dash, although there’s an FM converter hidden inside so it’s a bit more entertaining to use. R/T-logo floor mats look right and protect the carpets and even the seat belts have fresh webbing and restored buckles. There’s literally no detail that was overlooked during this restoration. The trunk is correctly finished with a reproduction mat, full-sized spare tire assembly, as well as an original jack tucked into the driver’s side quarter panel area.

The base engine on the R/T was a 440 cubic inch “Magnum” V8 rated at 375 horsepower, and this Charger carries its original, numbers-matching mill. It was fully rebuilt during the restoration and highly detailed before it went back into the engine bay. The carburetor, distributor, and alternator are date-code correct and likely original to the car, and they, too, have been rebuilt so it’s all working properly. The block wears more Hemi Orange, albeit a bit different shade than the bodywork since it’s non-metallic, as well as a correct dual-snorkel air cleaner up top. Hardware, hose clamps, and even the red cap battery are pretty much as Chrysler did it in 1970. Experts might spot one or two very small items that aren’t exact, but even they will be impressed by how right this car’s engine bay really is. And don’t worry, this isn’t a fussy trailer queen, either. Turn the key and it fires easily and idles well, even when it’s cold. Get it on the road and all 375 horses show up, ready to party, with a huge wave of torque that makes the Charger feel like a smaller car. And oh, does it make lovely noises!

You might think that an automatic transmission would be a handicap in a car like this, but I would argue with a smooth-riding suspension, cold A/C, and 3.23 gears, this is a car made for grand touring rather than drag racing. Of course, it’ll rack ‘em up and knock ‘em down with the best of them, but the automatic transmission allows it to be mellow when you want it to be mellow, something that we can’t always say about the manual transmission cars. It is the car’s original, matching-numbers TorqueFlite, and it is feeding the original 8.75-inch rear end. The floors are as beautifully finished as the bodywork, providing a fantastic bright orange background for the satin black subframes, cad-plated suspension components, and shiny aluminized exhaust system with correct chrome tips. A new gas tank hangs out back, and obviously all the little stuff like brakes, lines, hoses, springs, and shocks are brand new. The only significant deviation from factory stock is the addition of 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels, but nobody’s going to complain about that great-looking upgrade, especially with those fat BFG radials wrapped around them.

As I said, documentation is extensive. We have a complete, legible Chrysler Corporation Broadcast Sheet, original owner’s manual, period brochures and booklets, a factory service manual and parts book, a CD-ROM with factory literature, a very large album full of restoration photos from start to finish, and a massive stack of receipts showing virtually every part and service that went into the restoration. Oh, and there’s Galen Govier paperwork proving that this car is legit. The pedigree on this car is extremely impressive.

Rarely do cars get everything right the way this Charger does. It’s gorgeous, it’s fast, it’s reliable, and it’s exceptionally accurate. It’s also well-documented, completely stock, and just happens to be one of the most desirable muscle cars of all time. If you’ve been looking for a Charger and don’t want compromises, this is the one. Don’t wait, because like the others, I’m just sure this one won’t last long. Call today!
