Thanks to fuel injection, it starts instantly, idles properly, and goes about its business as any modern Toyota should.

We don’t like to deal in absolutes in the car world, but we simply can’t imagine that there are any second-generation A60 Toyota Supras nicer than this late-production 1985 example. With just three owners, exceptional maintenance history, and absolutely incredible preservation, it’s an ‘80s icon that’s seeing a lot of renewed interest today. Yes, someone has enjoyed this car for the past 35 years, but the overall condition suggests that it was always a beloved toy, never a commuter and never in the snow. Everything works, it runs and drives superbly, and we have to admit that the muscular, angular look has aged better than many of its ‘80s contemporaries (I’m looking at you, Z-car). If you were there in the ‘80s, you know these were fun, affordable, reliable cars, and now that Japanese sports cars are seeing some serious collector interest, this is a chance to own a great one.

That’s 98% original paint, which not only looks awesome today but eliminates the potential for hidden issues lurking underneath. There’s zero evidence of bodywork or accident damage, but we do have a $200 receipt for some paint touch up behind the left rear wheel, so it was obviously nothing major. Still, if this car has ever seen more than a spring shower I’d be surprised. Heck, there aren’t even any door dings in its flanks! Code 3F2 paint is amusingly called, “Super Deep Red,” and it looks great—not too bright, but not burgundy, either, offering the same balance of sporty and sophisticated as the rest of the car. By 1985, Toyota’s reputation for quality was already well established, so panel fit is excellent even by today’s standards. The longer nose and hood dome necessitated by the inline-6 engine add to the performance look and those hunky fender flares that were unique to the P-Type still look awesome. You’ll note the chin spoiler hasn’t been bashed by parking curbs, there are integrated mud flaps that have preserved the rockers, and even the nose, which is also original paint, only shows the most minor signs of use. Up close you can see a few minor nicks, but it really does look as good in person as it does in photos. Just as important, all the satin black trim is in excellent shape with no UV damage or fading, and even the big SUPRA decal on the deck lid is almost like new. The preservation really is remarkable.

This is a P-Type, which means Performance, and it carries optional leather upholstery. Like the rest of the car, someone was VERY careful about maintaining the leather and the seats show only very minor signs of use and age. Yes, the futuristic design and squared-off instrument panel are very ‘80s Japan, but that’s the whole point of owning a retro car, right? The leather-wrapped wheel is suitably fat and feels great in your hands, and in traditional Toyota fashion, everything feels durable and well-constructed. The control layout is a little chaotic, with three stalks on the steering column, a few pods flaking the gauges, and everything else in the center stack, but it’s easy to get familiar and we like the form-follows-function vibe. You will note that this car is loaded, including power windows, locks, and mirrors, automatic climate control with ice cold A/C, cruise control, rear defroster, a tilt steering column, and a decent-sounding AM/FM/cassette stereo with a graphic equalizer (remember those?). Big, easy-to-read analog gauges all work correctly, and I suppose it’s worth mentioning that nobody has ever smoked in this car (it was the ‘80s, remember?). In back, the nicely finished fold-down seats look virtually unused and the headliner is like new with no sagging. The hatch area includes a working privacy shade (virtually unobtainium!) as well as sensible tie-downs and protective rub strips on the carpet, which shows only one minor faded spot as a demerit. Underneath, the original Dunlop spare tire and matching alloy wheel are as-new and have never been used. The original jack and lug wrench in its factory pouch are also included.

For 1985, the 5M-GE 2.8 liter DOHC inline-6 was significantly upgraded, now making 160 horsepower and 169 pounds of torque. In today’s world, that seems fairly modest but in practice the Supra is just a delight to drive, more like an early E-Type Jaguar than a late-model performance car. The silky-smooth six just accelerates without a single vibration all the way through its power band and never seems to run out of breath. Thanks to fuel injection, it starts instantly, idles properly, and goes about its business as any modern Toyota should. You can instantly see that this car has been superbly maintained and has never seen inclement weather—just check out all the lovely gold cadmium plating under the hood! Aside from a few replacement parts and restoration items (the valve cover has been repainted, for instance) the engine bay is completely original and fully operational. Correct hose clamps, fittings, hardware, and even a Toyota battery make it look factory fresh. Even the little built-in trouble light on the passenger’s side inner fender still works! It takes a significant investment in time and effort to keep a car looking this good under the hood.

Underneath, it’s just as nice with outstanding original floors still showing red paint overspray and the factory textured undercoating. The 4-speed automatic transmission is a great traveling partner, and with 4.10 gears on a limited slip, it’s punchy as hell. Set the ECT to “Power” and disengage the overdrive, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how well this Supra can hustle. Of course, a lot of that is due to the all-independent suspension, which is competent but comfortable, and the powerful 4-wheel disc brakes. Even though it was 1985, this Supra had the right hardware to get the job done. You’ll note more outstanding service work under here, including some recent work on the CV joints, fresh shocks at all four corners, a new cat-back exhaust system that has an awesome baritone soundtrack, and new brakes all around. It’s probably worth noting that this car is so clean that we have photos of a previous owner removing the inner fenders to clean every nook and cranny. Who does that?!? Factory 14-inch alloy wheels are unmarked and carry a recent set of 225/60/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials all around.

Extras include a full set of owner’s manuals, original window sticker (showing a rather eye-opening $18,108 MSRP), ownership documents back to Day One, and EXTENSIVE service receipts dating back 30 years. Few cars are better-documented than this Supra.

If you grew up in the ‘80s, you probably remember these cars fondly. Some guys were doing 5.0 Mustangs, but some of us were playing with early Japanese performance cars and understand that the balance, sophistication, and overall quality of a car like this Supra makes it feel contemporary even today. This is arguably the best one available anywhere—just look at the photos, the documentation, and the specifications—and while it may seem odd to celebrate a Japanese car as a collectable, it’s only just beginning. As with everything else in the collector car world, it’s always smartest to spend a little extra and buy a great car rather than try to make a cheap car into a great one. Even if you’re merely reliving the past with this Supra, you will surely find that this is one case where the past is every bit as good as you remember. Call now!
