The ’54 Mercurys were not all that different from the ‘53s, so the styling remained attractive and crisp, and the longer Mercury wheelbase makes it look sleeker than many of its Ford counterparts.

There are two sides to the old car hobby—the guys who like to tinker and the guys who just want to drive. Today, we see far more of the latter who just want to get out on the road and have fun in an old car. And because modern cars have gotten so good, they’re a lot less willing to put up with the idiosyncrasies of an elderly machine, so things like power steering, a decent stereo, and A/C become as important as the chrome trim and color. Fortunately, this 1954 Mercury Monterey hardtop neatly blends old and new in such a way as to keep the original personality of the car intact while adding all those neat features that so many guys want today.

At a glance, this Merc looks very much like it might have back in the mid-50s when it was Ford’s most stylish coupe. The color is pretty close to the factory’s Bloomfield Green (boy, there were a lot of greens on the Mercury color chart in 1954!) and the white top is an excellent touch. The ’54 Mercurys were not all that different from the ‘53s, so the styling remained attractive and crisp, and the longer Mercury wheelbase makes it look sleeker than many of its Ford counterparts. Finish quality on this resto-mod is very good, and despite it being an older build that probably has nearly two decades behind it, the finish shines up beautifully and shows very few signs of age or use. It isn’t perfect, but there are no major issues that stand out. Having good base stock probably helps, and it appears that they started with a good car, so the doors fit will, the trim lines up like it should, and the shine on the paint is quite appropriate—not too harsh like a modern car. Of course, all the stainless and chrome was either restored or replaced and remains in great shape, including the unique hood scoop and bright trim along the flanks. Accessory teardrop spotlights add a ‘50s touch and those taillights are still some of the coolest of the period.

Inside there are notable upgrades to enhance cruising comfort, starting with comfortable green and white vinyl upholstery done in traditional pleats. It’s bright and clean and new foam underneath means the seats are firm and supportive for all day drives. It also features matching carpets and custom door panels that add a bit of ‘50s flair to the interior. The dash has been subtly modified to handle a late-model GM tilt/telescope steering column and aftermarket gauges in the dash, but it feels familiar the moment you slide behind the wheel. Upgrades include power windows, effective A/C in an under-dash unit, and a trick floor shifter that lends a retro touch. A full set of aftermarket gauges monitors the engine’s vitals and the radio has been upgraded to FM reception and still uses the factory center speaker. Nice! There’s also a back seat big enough for real-sized adults and a white headliner that keeps it bright inside even with the tinted windows. The trunk has been custom upholstered to match and is still big enough for all your gear, making this car great for road trips.

Ford’s Y-block V8 was the big news in 1954, but this car was built to be easy to service and reliable to drive, so there’s now a great-running 305 cubic inch Chevy V8 in its place. Topped by an Edelbrock carburetor and intake manifold and very nicely detailed, it’s a smooth runner that’s got a reputation for bulletproof reliability. This one always starts easily, idles nicely, and pulls the big coupe around with effortless ease. Lots of recent service work means it’s ready to travel, and the modern support staff around it (alternator, A/C compressor, dual master cylinder, HEI ignition) all help with both reliability and easy service in the future. Power steering and brakes mean anyone can get in and drive this car any distance, and it’s even decent on fuel once you’re on the open road. Some chrome dress-up, a red engine block, and professional workmanship make this an engine bay that looks like someone really cared about doing the job right.

You may also notice the late-model A-arms poking through the inner fenders, as this car has a GM front clip that brings modern steering and power disc brakes to the party. It also gives the car great ride quality and the perfect stance, which didn’t happen by accident. The engine is backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission feeding what appears to be the original rear end, which rides on stock springs with lowering blocks so it sits just right. A custom dual exhaust system sounds suitably throaty without being annoying on the road and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how clean the floors are. There’s been some repair work in the rockers, but it was well done and doesn’t present any issues today and if I hadn’t mentioned it, you probably wouldn’t even notice it—this is a clean car. Just check out the spare tire well out back! Original steel wheels were painted red for a little flash and are fitted with 205/75/15 whitewall radials and factory hubcaps. A set of matching fender skirts is included with the car.

So here it is, the car that looks vintage and drives modern with all the comfort and convenience features you want. No excuses, no wishing for something that isn’t there, just a handsome, unusual Merc hardtop that drives even better than it looks. The price is a fraction of the build cost and you can get in and enjoy it immediately without a second thought. If you’re a driver, that’s really all that matters. Call now!
