Camaros and Chevelles remain perennially popular, but they can’t compete with the Road Runner in terms of being a fan favorite.

With a handsome frame-on restoration about five years ago, this 1969 Plymouth Road Runner probably isn’t going to last very long on the market. If there’s one car that sells quickly, it’s Plymouth’s affordable muscle car. Today, the long, sleek bodywork has an iconic look that belies the Road Runner’s low-cost roots. Check out the creases above the wheel arches, the gentle curve of the quarter panels, and the faux vents on the hood that give it a performance look—this is one great-looking car. Refinished in unusual Ivy Green, it has a grown-up look that’s sophisticated, not brash, and with a pair of hood stripes it has a bit of an attitude. Finish quality is very good with lots of time invested in block sanding the bodywork to give it clear reflections in the paint, free of distortions. The stripes are glossy rather than satin, so they look a bit more subtle and are easier to maintain, but that seems to be the lone variation from stock specs. Even the correct Road Runner decals were installed on the doors and trunk, adding a touch of whimsy to the all-business bird. Nice chrome and stainless trim looks great against the dark green paint and the black vinyl top is in excellent condition with no signs of trouble underneath.

Black buckets are exactly what you want in your performance Plymouth. All the upholstery was restored with the bodywork a few years ago and remains in excellent condition. Door panels, seat covers, carpets, all of it was replaced with correct reproductions that look awesome. The Road Runner includes a reasonably complete array of gauges, all of which are operational except the clock, and the HVAC controls hanging under the dash pad are just plain cool. A modern Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo replaces the original AM unit, but that and the floor mats are the only non-stock additions. The back seat looks like new and the trunk is correctly outfitted with a correct plaid mat and a full-sized spare tire.

The standard engine in the Road Runner was Chrysler’s bulletproof and ultra-torquey 383 cubic inch V8. All signs point to this being the car’s original, numbers-matching engine with a partial VIN stamped on the oil pan rail. We believe the engine was rebuilt when the rest of the car was restored and it is nicely detailed with Hemi Orange engine enamel, a correct air cleaner assembly, and the giant A/C compressor that dominates the engine compartment. It starts easily, idles nicely, and pulls the Plymouth around easily with that smooth flow of torque that only big block Mopars seem to have mastered. It just never feels like it’s working very hard. Keeping to the stock formula means it runs right and looks great under the hood and power steering makes it especially easy to handle. The A/C has been converted to R134a refrigerant and the system works well and the horns are correct “Beep! Beep!” units that were unique to the Road Runner for obvious reasons. You won’t mind showing off this engine bay.

The underside is unrestored but sometimes there’s just no reason to tear a car apart when it’s solid. There’s a bit of dirt and grime but it’s ideal for driving and you won’t have that particular worry in your mind when you’re out having fun. The TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission clicks off clean shifts and feeds a set of 3.54 gears inside a factory 8.75-inch rear end. A reproduction dual exhaust system gives it just the right soundtrack and terminates in chrome tips under the rear bumper that offer just the right amount of aggression. Floors, trunk extensions, rockers, and other critical areas are in excellent condition, so don’t worry about going out and having fun. And it gets its awesome stance from brand new 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels and 225/70/15 BFGoodrich redline radials.
