If you’re making a list of the fastest muscle cars of the era, the Buick GS deserves to be on it. With a thundering 510 ft-lbs. on tap, it was unquestionably the king of torque and there are documented tests with GS455s running low 13s right off the showroom floor. That was impressive in 1970. Add in the fact that these cars could be filled with Buick luxury and you end up with the muscle car that’s easy to live with every day. Only 1040 automatic GS455 convertibles were built, so they’re not exactly common, and they still command respect today. This lovely Flame Red ragtop gets the sport/luxury equation exactly right, combining the handsome bodywork with aggressive (and functional) hood scoops. Fit and finish are quite good and thanks to a body-off restoration several years ago, it remains in first-rate condition. The doors swing closed with a solid thunk rather than the usual rattle you get from tired GM convertibles, and you’ll note that the gaps are good all around. There’s also beautiful chrome, correct emblems, and a blacked-out grille that makes it look far more muscular than your average Skylark.

The black interior is more evidence that Buick was aiming for an upscale clientele. A bench seat makes this a muscle car for grown-ups and adds to the low-stress attitude of the car. Sure, there’s plenty of power on tap, but it never seems to be trying very hard to show it. The car is equipped with power windows, factory A/C, and a tilt steering column, as well as a trio of aftermarket gauges installed under the dash. There’s also a modern digital AM/FM radio in the dash, although it does a reasonably good job of looking OEM. The upholstery, door panels, carpets, and other soft parts were new when it was restored and there’s very little evidence of use, even on the high-traffic surfaces. A black power convertible top features a glass rear window and stows itself under a matching black boot. The trunk is outfitted with proper spatter-finish paint, a reproduction mat, and a full-sized spare and jack assembly.

Buick’s 455 cubic inch V8 made 350 horsepower, which was decent, but its real calling card was a massive whack of torque: 510 lb-ft. worth. It makes everything this car does feel effortless and it just hurtles itself forward when you drop the hammer. The engine wears a stamping that matches the VIN as well as a correct SR engine code. It is nicely detailed with correct Dante Red paint under that giant dual snorkel air cleaner assembly and someone was sweating the little stuff, because it has correct hose clamps, Delco battery topper, and reproduction decals. The only modification is a set of beautifully made headers that feed a custom 2.5-inch Flowmaster dual exhaust system that sounds epic. Of course, power steering and power front disc brakes are part of the GS package, making it easy to handle. The TH400 3-speed automatic transmission also carries a correct matching VIN stamp and 3.42 gears in the 10-bolt rear end make the most of the engine’s torque curve. Be sure to check out the ultra-clean floors, newer shocks, rebuilt front end, and a new gas tank hanging out back. Optional Buick Road Wheels look great and carry fat 225/70/14 BFGoodrich radials.

Documentation includes original manuals, some paperwork stating that the GS Society has verified that this is a real GS455, as well as a reproduction window sticker. The original radio, new power top hoses, and a few other parts also accompany the car.

Unquestionably the best year for Buick muscle, this GS455 neatly balances performance and comfort, sport and luxury, and does it in some of the most attractive sheetmetal of the period.
