The paint job is a satin yellow finish that looks cheerful and bright, but with a modern feel that makes this VW feel right at home in the 21st century.
Cool customized Bug. Rebuilt 1600 engine, 4-speed, lowered suspension. Awesome satin yellow paint job, new cloth interior. Upgraded 12-volt electrical system. New Diamondback radials. Sunroof. If you can’t have fun in this VW, you’re doing something wrong!
The great thing about the Volkswagen Beetle is that it can be all things to all people. There are as many different ways to build a Beetle as there are Beetles in existence, and perhaps that’s why they remain so enduringly popular with enthusiasts. Take this 1964 Volkswagen Beetle for example—it’s a mild custom that is still a sensible commuter that takes everything great about the Bug and turns it up a notch. The paint job is a satin yellow finish that looks cheerful and bright, but with a modern feel that makes this VW feel right at home in the 21st century. The bodywork underneath is quite nice and it doesn’t appear that this Bug was ever hit or rusty, and the doors fit with traditional Volkswagen precision. It has all the charming bits from the early Beetles, including the little grilles over the horns, small marker lights, and the big chrome bumpers with accessory bumper guards. All that brightwork is in very good condition and looks great sparkling against the satin paint job. This is a very appealing little Bug.
The interior offers fresh cloth seating surfaces with white piping for a traditional look, and someone spent the time to make it feel like 1964 inside. Darker brown carpets help anchor the interior and keep it from getting too bright, and custom door panels tie it all together. Controls are basic VW, including the giant steering wheel and simple gauges, which are all functional. The original AM radio remains in the dash, but an upgraded entertainment system lives in the glove box and powers a set of JBL speakers throughout the interior. Overhead, a crank sunroof lets in the sun and really transforms the interior on sunny days and there’s still a decent back seat for kids. Seat belts were added for safety and the shifter has a plain knob that assumes you’re already familiar with the quirks of the VW gearbox. Up front there’s a decent-sized trunk that has been upholstered to match the interior and includes a spare tire with its own matching cover.
The engine is a rebuilt 1600 cc flat-four, the same engine that has powered VWs for decades. It doesn’t break any new ground, but it’s bulletproof reliable and fun to drive with a nice torque curve and that familiar VW exhaust note. It does offer correct hardware like the Bosch ignition components, while the generator is now a 12V unit to power that upgraded stereo system. It starts easily and runs well, as you’d expect from a VW Beetle, and you’ll find that it’s happy to live in today’s world without any issues. Regular gas is just fine. The 4-speed manual has well-spaced ratios that make it feel quick around town and it’s happy at highway speeds without feeling like it’s working too hard, although performance is modest. Underneath, the floor pan has been replaced and is now in excellent condition, while the rest looks like nicely preserved original hardware. The brakes have been upgraded to discs in front and the suspension has been lowered a bit for a custom rake that looks awesome. Bright red wheels with traditional VW hubcaps really pop against the yellow paint and it’s finished with a fresh set of 145R15 Diamondback wide whitewall radial tires that ride and handle great.
Extras include a few manuals and some minor spare parts.
There’s a reason why Beetles have been popular for nearly 80 years, and this jaunty yellow Bug is a great example of the VW’s unique blend of utility, economy, good looks, and fun-to-drive road manners. There are no big surprises waiting for a new owner and whether you’re new to VWs or an experienced VW hobbyist, there’s something here that’ll appeal to you.
