This car is nice all out of proportion to its price.

Believed to be 45,438 original miles. One high-quality repaint in original colors. Excellent chrome and stainless trim. Very nice interior. Strong-running 322 cubic inch Nailhead V8 with Dynaflow. Affordable luxury with a lot of ‘50s style!

Buick was building some very high-quality cars in the 1950s, and by 1956, the all-new “Nailhead” V8 had become one of the most potent engines on the market. That combination of quality and performance put Buick on top of sales charts. Today, however, Buicks seem to languish in the shadow of their smaller cousins, the Chevrolets, which means that you can pick up this full-sized Buick luxury sedan for a fraction of the cost of a comparable Bel air. This 1956 Buick Super represents Buicks mid-line car. Not quite as luxurious as the Roadmaster, but packing the same muscular V8 under the hood. That combination, not to mention its reasonable price tag, means this is a whole lot of car for the money. We believe the 45,438 miles shown on the odometer is an accurate reading and the car certainly feels like a low-mileage original car. It has been repainted at some point and the quality paint job accurately replicates the original code ECE Dover White over Bedford Blue combination—perfect for the 1950s. Four “venti-ports” on the front fenders means a senior Buick (the lesser cars had only three) and the 1956 redesign cleaned up the car’s looks. Buick’s “sweep-spear” styling remained, highlighting the two-tone color combination, and this big sedan certainly looks impressive in person. All four doors close with a solid THUNK and someone spent more than the asking price simply restoring all the chrome. This car is nice all out of proportion to its price.

The attractive code 522 two-tone blue cloth interior has been restored and uses accurate materials and patterns to give it a direct-from-1956 look. The wide bench seat remains comfortable and the rear seat offers stretch-out space normally reserved for limousines. The big steering wheel feels commanding and all the gauges are operational. In fact, it appears that everything works, including the factory Sonomatic AM radio, which is a nice surprise. Carpets and door panels have been replaced, but the dash pad looks original and should give you an indication that this car has not been exposed to the elements. There’s more nice chrome throughout the interior and the headliner is in great condition for being nearly 70 years old. In back, there’s a cavernous trunk with original mats, new cardboard bulkheads, a full-sized spare and original jack assembly.

Buick’s 322 cubic inch V8, affectionately known as the “Nailhead,” cranks out substantial power: 255 horsepower and 341 lb-ft. of torque. Even in this big sedan, it makes the car feel energetic and highway cruising is effortless. There’s a big 4-barrel carburetor on top, protected by that awesome air cleaner assembly, and it looks like someone has spent some time cleaning and detailing the engine bay. This car is equipped with power steering, which makes it effortless to wheel around town and there’s more than $4000 in recent service work, so it’s 100% ready to go. Buick’s Dynaflow automatic transmission is unlike any other you’ve driven, but it’s smooth and effective once you get used to the complete lack of shifts. The undercarriage is original, but what you see is light surface scale, not rust or rot, and the car is completely solid, even in the trunk and rockers—even the spare tire well is 100% solid. There are plenty of signs of recent maintenance, including new brake hoses and wheel cylinders, a stainless muffler, and fresh front shocks. Ride quality is excellent and thanks to 3.36 gears, this is a fantastic highway cruiser that can run at modern speeds. Steel wheels wear original hubcaps and a set of correct 7.60-15 BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewalls that make the car sparkle.

Extras include a spare hubcap, some extra parts, and a factory shop manual.

We’re very impressed with this 1956 Buick Super and think it represents a first-class way to travel, even today. A nearly ideal combination of restored and original, it presents extremely well and drives as great as it looks. If you’re looking for an affordable way to own a ‘50s icon, this is a fantastic choice. All the hard work is done so you just need to get in and enjoy. Call today!
