The past 20 years have proven that these were well-built cars, and this one has clearly led a good life.
Unusual 2004 Thunderbird convertible. One of 1000 Pacific Coast Editions with unique color scheme. Two tops, everything works. Great-running V8, newer tires, runs and drives great. The collector car for people who don’t want to own an OLD car.
The newest Ford Thunderbird was collectable from the moment it first hit showrooms, and that remains especially true today. Their status as a special car means that most of them lived easy lives and special editions like this 2004 Thunderbird Pacific Coast Edition make them even more appealing. They were immediately welcomed into the collector car community, meaning that you could own a late-model that’s welcome at many shows and that would attract attention wherever it goes, but which doesn’t have the old car foibles that many folks want to avoid. In short, if you can have just one hobby car, this 2004 T-Bird is a great choice. We really like the soft Monterey Mist Metallic paint on this car, partially because it’s a classic Thunderbird look and partially because it’s not red, which gets kind of boring. The misty green finish is easy to maintain and looks great on a convertible with such a retro vibe. The paint remains in excellent condition with no evidence that this car has ever been hit and obviously there’s no rust or other damage. Panel fit on these cars was quite good and the doors swing closed with a heavy thunk that’s very reassuring. The past 20 years have proven that these were well-built cars, and this one has clearly led a good life.
The Light and Dark Ash leather interior is a great blend of modern function and classic styling cues. Everything was standard equipment on the top-of-the-line Thunderbird, so you get things like cold A/C, power windows, locks, seats, and mirrors, cruise control, and a power tilt steering column. The brushed stainless accents mirror the original 2-seat ‘Bird’s wrap-around cockpit design and the white-faced gauges are just plain beautiful. You’ll note a little scuffing on the driver’s seat of this car, but that’s the only real demerit inside. Everything works, it’s comfortable to settle behind the wheel for a long road trip, and there’s no doubt that you look like a movie star when you drive one of these. The original AM/FM/CD stereo system sounds great even at speed with the top down. And speaking of the top, the black canvas power convertible top is in great condition and stows itself quickly and easily, and a contrasting silver hardtop is included with the car. There’s also a decent-sized trunk that’s ideal for two people out for a weekend adventure.
The engine is a 3.9 liter DOHC V8 that makes 252 horsepower and 267 lb-ft. of torque. The result is an energetic 2-seater that makes great V8 noises but never gets unruly. These are proven powerplants that have turned out to be quite reliable in the long run, and this one has been properly maintained all its life. Turn the key and it springs to life quickly and idles smoothly, and out on the road it always has power in reserve ready to go. Part of that energetic feel is due to the quick-shifting 5-speed automatic transmission that always keeps the V8 in its sweet spot, plus there’s a tall overdrive for relaxed cruising at high speeds. The suspension is fully independent, so it rides better than any vintage Thunderbird, and there’s a powerful disc brake at all four corners, augmented with ABS. With 2.69 gears out back, it even pulls down decent fuel economy. This car is a little grungy underneath—in line with its mileage—but it’s quite solid and shows signs of proper maintenance over the years. And those multi-spoke aluminum wheels are exactly the right choice on this subtle ‘Bird, carrying 235/50/17 performance radials with lots of life left in them.
These Thunderbirds are easy to love. They ask for very little, they work like real cars, and yet they stand out in a crowd anywhere they go. Add in the awesome affordability, great reliability, and fantastic road manners, and you get a no-compromises hobby car. If you’ve been looking for something interesting but aren’t quite sure you want to maintain an antique, this is our recommendation. Call today!
