Someone spent a huge amount of time, effort, and money on this slick little rod.

The amazing thing about this gorgeous 1935 Ford cabriolet is that you can’t see how many changes went into the build unless you have a stock one next to it. All the usual hot rodding tricks are here, of course, but most significantly, the entire car has been sectioned to give it a low-profile look that’s instantly familiar but so much more dramatic. And oddly enough, this is one of those rare cars that looks far better in person than it does in photos—while we don’t really know why, it looks longer, lower, and sleeker when it’s right in front of you. Every time we walk pas this car in the showroom, there’s something new to see, which is one of the hallmarks of a great build. Someone spent a huge amount of time, effort, and money on this slick little rod.

We really need to start with the amazing job of sectioning that someone did on this car. If you’re not familiar with the term “sectioning,” it means someone cut it in two lengthwise—top and bottom—and removed a few inches of car, then welded it all back together to make it lower and leaner. The amount of work required to do it well is astronomical and getting everything to fit properly when you’re done is no easy task. But someone did a superior job here and not only does it look amazing, it fits together beautifully. The doors fit and close as well as any stock cabriolet and the subtly re-shaped the deck lid to make it graceful without looking like it has been modified. Note that the fenders have been gently faired into the bodywork so there’s no seam and keeping both the rumble seat and rear-mounted spare is a stroke of genius. Even the hood was cut apart and rebuilt to fit perfectly without looking modified, which is a real trick. The original 1935 grille was modified to tuck underneath and flow with the fenders and a set of period aftermarket headlights with built-in marker lights was installed in place of the original stainless units. Then it was smoothed and finished in glossy burgundy paint that lets the bodywork speak for itself without the need for flashy graphics, flames, or excessive pinstripes. It’s really impressive.

The interior is no less beautifully finished, offering a pair of low-back bucket seats wrapped in simple tan leather with brown piping and matching carpets. Professional workmanship is reflected in the matching door panels, custom-bound floor mats, and the fully finished rumble seat. A tilt steering column with a billet wheel wrapped in matching brown leather makes it easy to get comfortable and vintage-looking Moon Eyes gauges are a nice change from the usual Auto Meter stuff. That’s the original dashboard, complete with factory ashtray in the center, a feature too cool to remove, and a custom panel houses a Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo head unit. There are very few signs of use, although this is an older build, a testament to the quality of the materials and workmanship. We’re also impressed with the folding top, which is the original Ford unit that stows neatly and seals up rather well with roll-up windows for inclement weather. A matching tan canvas boot is included, but it unfortunately has a small hole.

Power comes from a familiar 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 that’s powerful and reliable but not so over-blown that it makes the car a handful to drive and maintain. Instead it sticks to the familiar recipe: Edelbrock carburetor on top, a modest hydraulic cam, and proven components. It starts easily, idles nicely, and pulls the relatively lightweight Ford around with ease, offering no hiccups or stutters in the power delivery and no fussy road manners. The big aluminum radiator ignores warm days and traffic, the headers tuck in tight to the block, and all the wiring is new. Power steering and power disc brakes are part of the package, making it easy for anyone to handle and service access is rather good despite the sectioned hood.

Underneath, the factory frame was retained with several reinforcements and modifications to handle the modern running gear, along with several more recent updates. There’s a newer front suspension, which appears to be a fabricated crossmember with upper and lower control arms and coil-over shocks, plus the power steering rack. There’s also a familiar TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that shifts cleanly and without any drama, and it feeds a tough 9-inch Ford rear end with 3.50 gears inside. In between you’ll find clean original floors with no patches or rough areas, a purring exhaust system with traditional glasspack mufflers, and a suspension that rides well despite the lowered ride height. A set of Cragar Street Pro wheels with spinners look exactly right and carry staggered 215/60/15 front and 235/60/15 rear blackwall radials.

This is a car that really needs to be seen in person to truly appreciate all the work that went into the build, and pictures just don’t seem to capture the low, sleek look. It’s really much cooler than it appears in photos. Build quality is exceptional and it drives superbly, with great road manners and an easy-going personality. Stand out from all the plastic rods and generic 3-window coupes with this stunning all-steel cabrio. Call today!
