Where most of its competition got crude little 4-cylinders, Triumph installed a wondrously smooth and torquey six, and that makes all the difference.

Tidy, well-sorted TR6. Factory overdrive. One older repaint, nice black interior, good wood dash. Upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo. Very clean and solid underneath, no structural issues. Drives great! An affordable TR6 ready to have fun.

British Racing Green is always an excellent choice on open sports cars from Great Britain, so when this one was repainted several years ago, the color was changed from Carmine Red. Workmanship was good, and while there are signs of age and enjoyment it still looks good going down the road. The only notable issue is a small crease in the driver’s door running parallel to the leading edge of the door itself, probably from a little over-extension. Correct TR6 decals were pasted on the quarters ahead of the lights and it still carries its British Leyland emblems on the front fenders. There’s enough chrome and stainless trim to make it look well-dressed, and it remains in very good condition. As a late production TR6, it has the large rubber overriders on the bumpers but somehow they look right. There’s also a subtle chin spoiler and a chrome flip-up gas cap for a racy feel. The only notable modification is that the tail panel was painted to match the bodywork, and it looks so good we can’t complain about the change.

The black vinyl interior is more spacious than most early British sports cars and feels somewhat more plush than your average MGB. Correct upholstery has a pure 1970s look and yes that’s real wood on the dashboard. The leather-wrapped wheel feels great in your hands and works well with the surprisingly communicative steering. Handsome Smiths gauges have big, legible numbers that are easy to read at a glance and they all work properly to monitor the engine. There’s a modern Alpine AM/FM/CD/iPod/USB stereo that sounds decent, although with the top down and the burly six-cylinder humming away, it might just be redundant. The black convertible top seals up reasonably well—this is a British sports car, after all—and it includes a matching black boot to make things look tidy. There’s a reasonably-sized trunk with a full-sized spare living underneath.

The reason these are special cars is the 2.5 liter inline-6 that lives under the long hood. Where most of its competition got crude little 4-cylinders, Triumph installed a wondrously smooth and torquey six, and that makes all the difference. It starts easily and idles well, and out on the road there’s a fantastic six-cylinder bellow that is pure joy. You’ll downshift just to spin it past 4000 RPM for the soundtrack alone, and unlike it’s peaky competitors, there’s torque all over the map. The engine bay shows signs of regular maintenance and remarkably, all the factory equipment is intact, including the AIR injection system. A few new parts like the master cylinder and belts and hoses suggest that it has led an easy life. This car also comes with a factory overdrive, which transforms the TR6’s personality on the highway. Simply flick the lever on the left side of the steering column and it drops into overdrive seamlessly, dropping about 25% off the revs at the same time. It’s really significant. The all-independent suspension is capable yet surprisingly supple, with agile handling that doesn’t need to beat you up to be discovered. Brakes are decent for the car’s weight and the steering is light without the need for power assist. And you’ll note in the photos that the frame, floors, and other structural areas under the car are in excellent shape. Factory steel wheels look sporting and carry big 205/70/15 Yokohama radials.

These little sportsters have been favorites of ours for years and they’re finally getting the respect and admiration they deserve. Fast and fun, they’re the very essence of the British sports car. They’re also surprisingly comfortable, very reliable, and affordable to own. If you could own just one hobby car, there’s an argument to be made for putting a TR6 in your garage. Call today!
