McBett’s Racing took a 390 FE V8 and stroked it to 446 cubic inches, and today it ensures a good 500 horsepower is on tap.

Incredible pro-touring build. 446 cubic inch FE V8, Tremec 5-speed, full Total Control Products suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, custom stainless exhaust, custom bucket seats, cold A/C, Auto Meter gauges. Fast and capable!

Dressed in low-profile anthracite gray, this 1967 Mustang coupe doesn’t scream performance. That’s OK, because we like the semi-sleeper attitude and it’s the hardware underneath that really matters. Aside from the custom Shelby-style billet grille up front, it’s pretty stock and that helps with the stealth image. The charcoal gray paint is decent if not show-quality but the car wears it well and it was applied over some straight sheetmetal. Good gaps all around are a sign that someone cared about getting it right, and the coupe’s shape is handsome from any angle. The Mustang emblems have been shaved, but it still says FORD proudly on the hood and MUSTANG on the trunk, which is the only thing most guys will see anyway. The traditional three-element taillights look bright against the dark gray finish and all the chrome shines up nicely. No spoilers, no stripes, no fake Shelby badges, just a clean, sleek Mustang coupe that brings the thunder.

Inside, the upgrades are obvious, starting with the body-hugging ProCar bucket seats that are entirely appropriate for the car’s capabilities. The woodgrained wheel is on a tilt column, making it easy to get comfortable and the fatter rim feels great in your hands. A full set of Auto Meter Phantom gauges have been neatly installed in the original dash, seamlessly blending old and new, while a modern Sony AM/FM/satellite/USB stereo sounds great (not that you’ll ever use it after you hear the exhaust note). Fully functional A/C keeps the interior cool and with the tall overdrive gear in the 5-speed, this is a great car for eating up long stretches of pavement. The back seat is upholstered to match the front buckets so it has a cohesive look and there are new door panels and a fresh headliner overhead. The trunk is outfitted with a correct plaid mat along with a modest subwoofer enclosure and a remote-mounted battery in an aluminum box.

Check the VIN and you’ll see that this is a factory A-code car, which meant a 225-horsepower 289. However, when it was time to build some performance they put in a call for more cubic inches—157 extra cubes, to be precise. McBett’s Racing took a 390 FE V8 and stroked it to 446 cubic inches, and today it makes a good 500 horsepower is on tap. The car is ferociously fast. You can see that serious money was spent under the hood with beautiful detailing and expensive components like the fabricated aluminum valve covers, full Total Control Products shock tower reinforcement system, a giant aluminum radiator, and an electronic ignition system. It starts easily, idles nicely, and definitely rips through the gears with enthusiasm. The Tremec TKO 5-speed manual is a great partner with great ratios and easy clutch action thanks to a hydraulic system that makes even the heavy-duty clutch feel light. The front suspension features tubular control arms, power rack-and-pinion steering, and a set of oversized disc brakes. Long-tube headers dump into a custom 3-inch stainless exhaust system with an X-pipe and you’d better believe it sounds spectacular. Super clean floors are reinforced with subframe connectors and the rear suspension is augmented by a set of adjustable traction bars. The 8.8-inch rear end was custom built and packed with 3.73 gears on a limited slip with a heavy-duty aluminum cover. Beautiful 17-inch Shelby-style wheels are the right choice and carry staggered 235/45/17 front and 255/45/17 rear Goodyear performance radials.

Documentation includes a huge folder full of receipts, invoices, manuals, a detailed build diary, and other documentation related to the build.

This is how you do a pro-touring Mustang. Big power, potent handling, and plenty of comfort to go with it. This coupe is also nicely documented so you can easily service it in the future and they started with a clean shell so there are no scary issues hiding underneath. There’s big money spent on the important stuff, making this a Q-ship that stalks its prey in traffic with ease. Call today!
