This is a nasty big horsepower brute full of race car hardware that walks and talks large.
Beautiful 5-window pickup with thundering race-grade firepower. 383 cubic inch V8, 500+ horsepower, built TH400 automatic. 4-wheel disc brakes, dropped front axle, 4-link rear axle. A very attractive 3100 full of race car performance.
This isn’t a friendly little pickup truck. If you’re looking for something nice in which to take the wife to cruise nights, well, this ain’t it. This is a nasty big horsepower brute full of race car hardware that walks and talks large. You could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, since the black bodywork is so nicely finished and other than some rather fat rear tires, it doesn’t really advertise the big firepower underneath. Fit and finish are very good, and it wears the glossy black paint proudly, because someone spent a lot of time getting it right. Doors fit nicely, the hood snugs down properly, and the bed is full of shiny oak planks that help hide the lowered suspension. The fact that it’s not shaved or chopped or frenched helps with the illusion that it’s just a nice old truck, but if you look closely, all the lighting is LED, the chrome and stainless trim is fresh, and the embossed CHEVROLET on the tailgate is subtle. We can’t quite call this nasty pickup a sleeper, but at a glance it is certainly deceiving. This is a beautifully finished truck where someone spent the time to get it looking right.
The interior doesn’t deviate much from the original formula: bench seat, big steering wheel, and not much else. If you need a quiet cabin with A/C and a stereo, this isn’t your truck. What you do get is a nicely upholstered factory bench that uses grippy cloth to help hold you in place and black carpets in place of the original rubber mat. The factory gauges are still in place, but they’ve been superseded by a set of aftermarket dials under the dash and a big tachometer with shift light up top. Aircraft-style toggle switches control the only functions you need: ignition, starer, lights, and a cooling fan. There is no radio, but it wouldn’t be usable anyway because this thing sounds like the god of thunder is angry at you. There is, however, a nice cardboard headliner overhead, new weather seals in the doors, and a heater, just in case. We told you; this truck is built for combat.
That combat-readiness comes from a thumping 383 cubic inch stroker motor under the hood. It is reported to make something north of 500 horsepower, although we haven’t dyno’d it to verify. It certainly sounds the part, with a lumpy camshaft, a massive Holley double-pumper on an aluminum Edelbrock intake manifold, and a set of ported heads up top. The supporting cast includes a huge aluminum radiator with electric fan and a transmission cooler, a chrome alternator, and all-new wiring. Power is transferred through a rugged TH400 3-speed automatic transmission with a deep sump oil pan back to a 9-inch Ford rear end with what we believe are 3.73 gears inside. There’s a solid dropped axle up front with new shocks while the rear is held up with a 4-link on coil-overs. The stainless exhaust system features single chamber Flowmaster mufflers, which is where it gets its spectacular soundtrack and there’s a vented disc brake at all four corners. You’ll note the cab floors and corners are in excellent condition and it doesn’t look like this truck was rusty or patched up—they started with something clean. 17-inch polished aluminum wheels look fantastic against the black paint and carry staggered 255/50/17 front and 275/50/17 rear performance radials.
A lot of guys walk into the showroom and say they want big horsepower. Well, here it is. This is a raucous, nasty, and seriously fast pickup with all the things that come with that stuff. It is not friendly, it is not soft, and it is not for the guy who wants to say, “Hey y’all, watch this!” If that sounds like your kind of fun, bring your pilot’s license and come see it today!
